Patina is a surface system
Some patinas form naturally as a metal reacts with its surroundings; others are intentionally developed in a workshop. The resulting color depends on alloy, preparation, chemistry, temperature, humidity and later exposure.
A photograph cannot reliably identify a patina recipe. Responsible documentation separates observed appearance from known treatment history.
Make a sample first
A sample coupon lets a maker compare color, sheen and coating compatibility before treating the object. It also creates a record for future maintenance.
Polish is not a universal sign of quality. A matte, chased, burnished or weathered surface can be more appropriate to the concept and location.
Safety boundary
Surface treatments can involve corrosive chemicals, airborne particles and fumes. Follow current safety data, use qualified supervision, ventilation and the protective equipment specified for the process. Never improvise a chemical treatment from an editorial description.
